As the years advance, we tend to get more and more health conscious. We take more and more care of ourselves, and we care more about what goes into our bodies. This goes for the water as much as it does the food; we used charcoal water filters, for example, to make sure that the water we drink is healthy. Given the number of contaminants in today's water that can be difficult. One of those solutions is the Berkey water filter.

The Berkey water filter has a couple of different systems in order to insure that the water that it purifies is good to drink. The first system is the traditional charcoal water filter. The water goes into the pitcher and through a carbon filter; the carbon traps unhealthy metallic ions, arsenic, and even fluoride. The process only takes a few seconds, and, as long as the filter is replaced every 1000 pitchers or so, the water inside is almost perfectly pure of contaminants.

Berkey has several systems in this vein; they range from normal pitcher size to the 2.5-gallon Big Berkey, depending on the amount of water that your crowd goes through. Given the amount of you drink a day, as well as drinks that you prepare (such as fruit concentrates, powdered drinks, and even baby's formula), that can be a lot.

Of course, if you want something a little more modern, there is the Berkey light water filter. The system is a little more advanced, and it takes a little more time for the water to be purified, but the system otherwise works just as well if not better than a charcoal water filter. The basic principle is that the water is flashed with ultraviolet light, and then filtered as normal. Besides providing a double-filter, the ultraviolet light eliminates some other impurities that the traditional filter simply cannot; by acting in tandem, the two systems ensure that the water is as pure as it can be. Berkey also has ionic purifiers available, where the water is purified by contaminants being attracted to a surface, and then being disposed just like a normal filter, except that the filter merely needs to be cleaned not disposed of.

The nice thing is that both systems are great for a variety of situations. Unlike a number of water purification systems, they work well even in more natural environments; not only do they work well in the kitchen, but also on the trail. They can purify water from almost any source, such as lake, rivers, and ponds, and have the carrying capacity to ensure that there is enough water available at any time for whatever use is needed at the time. Thus, if you are on the trail, you can have pure water at any time, whether you need water for cooking drinking, doing dishes, or taking showers.

There is no reason not to be drinking pure water. With all of the contaminants in today's water, having some form of water purification can be a blessing.
